School team is first to take part in parkrun

A group of 63 children, along with parents, carers, siblings and staff from the city’s newest school, took part in the free weekly run at Oaklands Park last Saturday.

They were being sponsored to raise money for outdoor play equipment for the school, in Vinnetrow Road, Runcton.

The sun came out as the siren went at 9am and staff said the children’s enthusiasm was obvious as they vied for position in either the 1k, 3k or 5k distances.

Principal Guy Martyn said: “This was a fantastically organised event by Chichester Parkrun and we are so grateful to them for allowing the school to take part.

“We had a lot of fun and I know that it has inspired many of the children – and a few of the staff – to take part in future meets.”

Chichester Parkrun is open to runners of all standards and it is organised entirely by volunteers to give people the chance to run for enjoyment. People are encouraged to jog or run together, regardless of their abilities.

Founder Mike Houston said: “It’s brilliant to see so many children running and getting a lot of personal satisfaction and enjoyment out of it.

“There is no pressure to win with Parkrun, this is not a race but it is a lot of fun.

“Chichester Free School were a fantastic addition to our 43rd meet and the children were a credit to their school.”
