Pupils from the Weald Community School and Sixth Form will be defending their electric racing title in the Greenpower F2 national championships and need £1,500 to ensure their car is on the grid.

As well as winning the title in 2014, the Weald were champions in 2006 and would like to make it a hat-trick of successes. So they are appealing to local businesses to provide sponsorship to enable them to develop their latest racer.

Team boss and Weald School student John Woodhead said: “We are very proud to represent Billingshurst and the local area as Greenpower champions 2014, and are calling on local businesses to support our push to retain the title this year and develop our latest car for the F24 series in return for national brand exposure at race events.”

The Greenpower F24 series is an international championship for 11-16 year olds which provides a platform for students to learn science, engineering, maths and technology in an engaging and exciting way.

The cars are designed, built and raced by the pupils against cars from more than 500 schools from across the country and outside the UK.

John added: “This is more than an after-school project, it is teaching us key skills for our future careers and testing our abilities against the best young talent in the world.”

The school made history in 2014 as the first to have secured two places on the podium at the national finals event at the Goodwood Circuit, with its Black Bullet and Purple Predator cars finishing first and third respectively.

Current sponsors include Rotary International, MSS Developments, SpaAluminium and Racelogic.
