Schoolboys excel in writing competition

The annual competition, which is open to over 300 schools in the Independent School Association (ISA), receives hundreds of entries.

First prize in the boys’ intermediate section went to William Orams, in year 8, for ‘Life in 2050’, a dystopian narrative about the bleakness of existence in 2050.

Ewa Jozefkowicz, adjudicator, said: “His writing is highly accomplished in terms of accuracy and vivid use of description. I was particularly taken by the focus on small, emotive details, which really build up atmosphere. William writes with skill and flair, and is clearly also an avid reader.”

Joshua Firsht, in year 10, took first place in the boys’ senior section with his entry ‘The Devil’s Workshop.’

It uses descriptive language to great effect in order to convey a sense of growing menace and discomfort.

Jon Dixon, adjudicator, commended Joshua as the strength of the boys’ entries this year was extremely high.

Richard Taylor-West, headmaster at Shoreham College, presented the two with their prizes and certificates during school assembly.

He said: “I am immensely proud of the pupils’ success in this fiercely contested national competition, two first prizes, what a great achievement for themselves and our school.”
