Schoolchildren embark on nature trail

PUPILS at St Andrew's Primary have been planting trees in the grounds of their Steyning school to provide living classrooms.

The youngsters have joined forces with the Woodland Trust to plant native trees in a bid to get them interested in nature and conservation.

That's the aim of Tree for All '“ the UK's largest ever children's tree-planting campaign, launched by the Woodland Trust in 2004. The five-year scheme will see one million children plant 12million trees '“ one for every child under the age of 16.

Woodland Trust spokeswoman Natalie Clark said: "The planting of hedges and copses will attract wildlife and give schools living classrooms which pupils can enjoy for years to come.

"Each hedge and hazel copse pack we are giving to schools has instructions on how to plant the saplings and worksheets about the various species.

"Planting and using a hedge or hazel copse can contribute to key stage two in science, numeracy, literacy and art and design.

"Since the launch of the trust's hedge and copse scheme in 2004, Sussex schoolchildren have contributed to the reinstatement of 60 miles of hedgerows in the UK."
