School's action plan in wake of inspection

GOVERNORS at Bexhill High have produced an action plan following the last visit from Ofsted inspectors who judged it 'satisfactory'.

Chair of governors Brian Kentfield said the aim is to move into the ‘good’ category.

He said: “We have a brand new £38 million building in Gunters Lane, and now we have to ensure the standards at Bexhill High go up as well.

“We have taken on board what the inspectors said - and indeed much of what they saw they viewed as being good - but we accept there are areas which Principal Mike Conn and his staff have to work on in the coming months.”

There were three main issues identified by OFSTED:

• Improving standards of teaching and learning so more lessons are judged as good or outstanding, and achieving greater consistency.

• A more coherent approach by senior managers to improving standards, and priorities must be linked more closely.

• the school’s Design and Technology specialism must become more influential.

Mr Conn said teaching and learning would be improved with extra peer coaching, supported planning, sharing good practice, effective monitoring, a full audit of staff skills, and promoting high expectations for all students.

A more coherent approach would be achieved by development for each subject being linked more closely to the overall school development plan. At present some subject plans are isolated.

Mr Conn also said that the specialism will become Design, Technology and Vocational, reflecting the opportunities at the new Skills Centre in Down Road and developing strong partnership links.

Mr Kentfield commented: “They were the three key issues when OFSTED visited, and they are being tackled. There were other supplementary issues, relating to the new school, which are being looked at on a regular basis, such as the length of the school day.”
