Schools add colour to festival

The 44th annual Rye Arts Festival launched on Friday 11 September with a colourful parade through town by the youngsters from Rye’s Schools.

The procession, which was led by students from Rye College and Rye Studio School with drums and a giant puppet also comprised all the 300 youngsters from Rye Primary, who wore costumes waved flags and carried giant octopuses around town.

Andy Stuart, from Rye Festival, said: “The carnival-like atmosphere that was created by the cheerful, colourful and noisy kids was helped by throngs of proud parents and grandparents, as well as shoppers and shopkeepers and curious tourists out on the streets enjoying the procession.

“The Festival is also working hard behind the scenes to provide Rye’s schools and their students with a large range of performances, workshops, masterclasses and experiences.”

Two days before the launch parade, Charlie Cobb, who is the Festival’s first ever Artist in Residence gave, a masterclass for 11 A level art students in Rye Studio School, talking about his work on designing the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympics, painting the pictures in the film Mr Turner and then a session on mixing pigments.

On Monday 14 the young classical guitarist Manus Noble went into Rye Primary to give a free performance.

Rye Arts Festival runs through to September 27 with over 50 ticketed events comprising classical and contemporary music, literary talks, historical walks, theatre, special film showings at the Kino as well as eight special and different art exhibitions at galleries in and around the town.
