Schools and motorists hit by snowfall

HEAVY snowfall brought chaos to the town this week, causing problems for workers and residents alike.

A string of road traffic accidents on Wednesday kept the Bexhill road policing unit busy.

There were minor accidents on King Offa Way and Barnhorn Road.

Sergeant Paul Masterson of the road policing unit advised drivers: "If you have to make a journey in the snow, make it carefully.

"If you don't have to make a journey then don't, because it's chaos out on the roads."

Bexhill schools also found themselves hit by the blizzard like conditions early in the morning.

St Peter and St Paul Primary School, Pebsham Primary School, Bexhill High and St Richards Catholic College were all closed.

The wintry weather also prevented Bexhill College from opening. A county council spokesman said: ""We have around 110 schools closed today and some that did open this morning are closing early.

"Our advice to parents is to keep listening to local radio broadcasts for the latest updates as schools first priority is to get the message out via this route.

"In adverse weather conditions, the headteacher will have the safety of their children as their number one priority and will also be considering other issues such as staffing, transport, heating and catering."
