A handful of schools in Eastbourne, Hailsham and Seaford will close next week because of teachers’ industrial action over pay and conditions.
Confirmed closures so far on Tuesday July 5 include St John’s Meads Church of England Primary School, Chyngton School, Seaford, Hawkes Farm Primary School, Hailsham, Hellingly Community Primary School and Seaford Primary School.
Other schools are expected to close or partly close but have not yet given notice to do so.
The industrial action has been called by members of the National Union of Teachers, who will walk out in what will be the union’s first national day of action since 2014.
Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of action saying it was to address school funding and to resume negotiations on teacher contracts.
In the NUT’s ballot, 91.7 per cent voted in favour of strike action, with a 24.5 per cent turnout.
The union says cuts in funding will have major effects on schools and teachers, whether academy or maintained, and will further erode terms and conditions, increase workload and impede pay progression for teachers.
