Georgian Gardens Community Primary School in Rustington took part in Recycle Week, which was organised by West Sussex Partnership and their environmental education programme delivery partner, Wastebuster.

The project, which ran from June 22-28, saw schools swap unwanted textiles for funds or points to spend on science or sports equipment.

Assisted by Wastebuster’s intergalactic mascot, Captain Busta, the Gregorian Gardens pupils collected outgrown and damaged clothes, shoes and curtains.

Teacher Deirdre Carolin, who also serves as Georgian Gardens’ eco-team coordinator, said: “I am very proud of the way in which the eco team, adults and children alike, have taken up the Wastebusters’ project of recycling textiles.

“Our school has been awarded three successive Eco-Schools Green Flags – the highest Eco-Schools award a school can achieve – so I am not surprised that the team rose, as ever, to the challenge of highlighting the scheme in our eco meetings and advertising it in assemblies and on posters around the school.

“The children’s enthusiasm, and knowledge about environmental issues is always a major part in the success of our work in this area.”

David Barling, West Sussex County Council’s cabinet member for residents’ services added: “This is a great scheme and one we fully support. Engaging children at a young age through programmes like this help to make sure that they adopt great recycling habits that they keep through to adulthood.

“I hope all our schools support this scheme. It would be wonderful to see lots of green flags flying across the county.”
