Schools make way for new homes plan

DOZENS of homes could be built on the site of the old Elm Grove Infant School and part of the former Littlehampton Community School.

West Sussex County Council has submitted outline plans for 68 houses and flats on land between The Littlehampton Academy and the Rosemead open space (see the end of this article for more Arun plans).

Access would be from both the new Fitzalan Road extension, which currently ends at the academy but will eventually run northwards to link up with the proposed Lyminster bypass, and from Elm Grove Road, to the east.

The site was identified for housing in Littlehampton’s neighbourhood plan, with a suggestion of up to 70 homes, and with access from Fitzalan Road. The Elm Grove Road access is likely to cause some concern when Littlehampton Town Council planning committee discusses the plans.

Just 13 homes, or about 19 per cent of the total, would be ‘affordable’, below the 30 per cent target set by Arun.

However, in a statement submitted with the planning application, the county council says the lower figure would allow the authority to make a larger contribution towards the funds needed to build the Lyminster bypass.

The scheme includes 12 two-bedroom flats, 16 two-bedroom houses, 36 three-bedroom houses and four four-bedroom houses.
