Schools vow to bounce back from closure threat

THREE head teachers of schools told to improve their GCSE results or face closure have declared their commitment to raising standards.

.Boundstone Community College in Lancing, King's Manor Community College in Shoreham and Thomas Bennett Community College in Crawley are among 638 secondary schools in England where less than 30 per cent of pupils achieve five good GCSEs, including maths and English.

The Government has launched the National Challenge, a 400m standards drive, with the goal that every secondary school will reach this GCSE baseline by 2011.

Both King's Manor and Boundstone are due to open as academies in 2009. But as well as creating academies, the Government says that where a school is completely unable to raise its exam results, it will encourage local authorities to close it and replace it with a National Challenge Trust school.
