Scout group under threat

FIRST Sompting Scout Group is in danger of closing after more than 40 years because it is in desperate need of leaders.

A Beaver Scout leader is needed immediately because the colony has been run by one assistant and the group Scout leader for the past 18 months, along with the help of parents, which cannot continue.

The leader can be anyone aged 18 and over who would be willing to help run a Beaver colony of 14 members aged six to eight. It meets at Sompting United Reformed Church hall, Cokeham Road.

The group also needs a lay person for the post of treasurer, as the current one is due to leave this month, and a chairman, which they have not had for a year.

Scouts from the Adur Valley Scout district took part in their annual St George's Day parade and service at Lancing College chapel.

Joy Carter, chairman of Adur Valley Scouts, said: "This is a particularly special year as it is the 90th anniversary of Cub Scouts and we are busy preparing for the centenary of the foundation of the Scouting movement in 2007.

"We would like to thank the headmaster, Mr Richard Biggs, for his kindness in allowing us to use the Lancing College chapel. It is a magnificent and moving venue to hold our parade."

St George is the patron saint of Scouting, and all the Scouts present renewed their Scout promises at the service.
