The event, held in Kirara-hama, Yamaguchi City, Japan, was attended by 32,000 Scouts from more than 150 countries. Fittingly, the jamboree’s theme was the spirit of unity.

Hannah Walker, 15, of Woodmancote Road, Worthing, said: “It’s been unforgettable and I’ve had an amazing time.

“At the Jamboree it was so much fun being in the middle of so many different nationalities and cultures. Hiroshima was really moving and made me think about Japan’s history.

“Tokyo was incredible and really exciting. Ending our trip with a stay with a Japanese family was an amazing conclusion to our journey and it was an honour meet them.”

Hannah Mitchell, 14, of South Farm Road, Worthing, added: “It was such a wonderful experience.

“I was so grateful to have the opportunity to go. I shall always remember the friendship of people from so many different countries and have memories to last a lifetime. It was truly magical.”

More than 3,000 of the Scouts that attended were from the United Kingdom.

The Worthing troop, made up of Matthew Votta, Hannah Walker, Holly Seacombe, Katy Jones, Tara Greenhalf, Jon Starr, James Clegg and Hannah Mitchell helped form part of the 36-strong ‘Yewnity’ Unit from West Sussex.

Spending a total of three weeks in Japan, their trip began with a busy few days sightseeing in the capital Tokyo, before heading by bullet train to Yamaguchi City.

They spent ten days taking part in a range of cultural activities which included a visit to Hiroshima, two days before the 70th anniversary of the nuclear bomb being dropped on the city during the Second World War.
