Screen debut fornew Rye cinema

The Kino Rye is being run by the same company that operates the highly successful Kino at Hawkhurst.

It includes a cafe and licensed bar and has created ten new jobs.

It is the first time the town has had a cinema in 42 years.

Based at the former library and adult education site at Lion Street, the cinema has been three years in the planning.

It was made possible by the Fletcher Group part-purchasing the site - a move which prevented Hastings College selling it off for private housing and the loss of a valuable local amenity.

The Kino will be screening five films in its opening week including big hitters such as Birdman and The Imitation Game and family favourite Paddington.

The very first film to be screened is the highly acclaimed Testament of Youth showing at 9am on January 16.

Also showing is the art-house film Winter Sleep.

There are two film theatres. The Red room seats 98 and The Blue Room 46.

Kino managing director Matt Breckon said: “It is very exciting. We will be open and screening seven days a week.

“A lot of work has gone into this and overall the result is stunning. We have the luxury of more space at Rye.

“The sound and picture quality is amazing.”

Hugh Kermode, from the Fletcher Group, said: “I am delighted. This has been a three year journey but it has been worth it.

“It is good to have been able to create ten new jobs in the town in the midst of a recession.”

The cafe will be serving light lunches, with hot options and up-market snacks.

Film prices are £9.50 before 3pm or £8.50 for students, under 16’s and over 60’s.

After 3pm the price is £10.50 or £9.50.

The first pre 10am film is £6.50 and Tuesday is two for one day, based on the full ticket price. For a double bill the first film is standard price and the second film £6.50.

Single membership is £40 a year, which includes three free tickets (five if over 60) and £1 off for members and guests.

Joint membership, for two adults at the same address, is £50, with four free tickets (six if over 60) and the £1 concession.
