Sea Scouts of the 2nd Bexhill Scout Group have been spending the winter months preparing to go to sea again on the training vessel East Sussex 1.

Sea Scout leaders say there is room for more recruits to join in their varied programme of activities.

Sailing on evening trips from Sovereign Harbour is part of the Scouts’ badge-based training programme which starts at the end of May with a district water weekend camp at Lydd. Here, all the Scouts take part in canoeing, sailing, raft building, archery and lots of other activities over the late May bank holiday weekend.

Following on from the camp, the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) will run a weekly evening training course aboard the 17 metre long training vessel East Sussex 1. This will include up to six trips out into Eastbourne Bay which gives the Sea Scouts practice in steering and navigation. Particularly popular are the ‘man overboard’ exercises where the Sea Scouts learn to steer the large vessel into position to pick up a dummy or a buoy.

Troop Scout Leader Jonathan Platten, says: “We have worked successfully with the MVS for several years and we’re one of very few Sea Scout troops that has access to such a large and capable vessel. The MVS provides us with nautical training, including safety on the water and navigation and communication skills, and they have run a very popular course on boats’ engines for us.”

Jonathan stresses, that Sea Scouts also take part in the same wide range of activities, through the badge programme, as all other Scouts. He says: “We have already held a camp fire at our site at Kiteye Wood which was enjoyed by all. We will be undertaking more activities there during the summer.”

The Sea Scouts are for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. Jonathan adds: “Parents interested in finding out more are very welcome to contact me. Now is a really good time to join as our activities are really set to get going in the next few weeks. We meet on Monday evenings in St Barnabas Church Hall in Sea Road” The 2nd Bexhill Beavers, for children aged six to eight, and Cubs, for children aged eight to ten and a half, would also welcome new members.
