OPEN CHURCHYARD: At St Peter’s, Belgrave Road. A nature trail, guided woodland walk, plant sale and tree planting by the Bishop of Lewes will be part of the Open Churchyard Day on Saturday June 4 from 10am to noon and then from 2pm to 5pm. The Bishop will be planting the fig tree a very Biblical Tree) at 10am. Plants will be on sale in the car park and refreshments in the church hall and entry is free. For children, they will be able to look for treasure and adults explore the marked woodland paths. Also for the historically minded there are a number of gravestones with interesting inscriptions. Nowadays the church is almost hidden on Blatchington Hill by its flint walls and the abundance of trees and shrubs a far cry from 100 years ago when it was almost just a bare patch at the intersection of Belgrave Road and Blatchington Hill. It is thanks to Rector from 1844 1880 Revd Nathaniel Dennis that there is such a profusion of greenery. In the days when the number of parishioners were only 138 nowadays it’s 9,552. Revd Dennis according to the inscription over the lych gate Pious Care of the Churchyard.

THE LATEST LECTURE: Being held at St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road, is how to run a successful independent bookshop is explained by Nash Robbins co-proprietor with Cate Olson of Much Ado Books, in Alfriston. He will also be offering to value any book which members of the audience care to bring along. Originating from America they have settle in the Downs countryside and run their Award Winning Business in Alfriston which includes Independent Bookshop of the Year Award. They have come involved in the local community and have raised £2,500 selling Christmas Stockings and that money has resulted in a new range of books chosen by teenagers and are being added to the Seaford and Newhaven Libraries. What is it like in these time to run an independent bookshop come and find out on Tuesday June 7 at 2.30pm. Tickets £7 which includes refreshments are available from Newberry Tully Estate Agents, Church Street.
