Seaford Town Council to consider bandstand plan

Exciting plans to create an informal bandstand area on Seaford seafront are being recommended for approval at Seaford Town Council.

The scheme is due to be considered at the council’s community services committee meeting this week.

It would be set up on the seaward facing raised deck at the Martello Tower and has been suggested by Seaford Community Partnership Seafront Theme Group.

Councillors were due to meet on Thursday September 26 at the Council Chamber in Church Street where officers were to advise them to agree the scheme and offer support.

The seafront theme group, which includes town and district councillors, ex councillors and members of the public, is also asking the town council to allow seafront memorial bench applications to be permitted as a way to pay for seating.

In the report to councillors it said: “Many coastal towns have seafront bandstands and performance areas, but it is openly recognised by Seaford Seafront Theme Group that high cost or significant structures are not realistic options, instead the proposal seeks to facilitate events rather than developing structures or creating a venue to house them.”

It is anticipated the project would be very cheap - a power supply could be taken from the Martello Tower.

Plays, live music, recorded music and dance could be performed.

Peter White, who is a director of the community partnership and involved with Seaford Rock and Jazz Orchestra, said the council had run out of places to put donated benches and this could provide an alternative.
