Seafront cleared for new arrivals later this year

SEAFRONT shelters along West Parade were knocked down this week as part of the Next Wave redevelopment project.

A Rother District Council spokesperson said the shelters were installed in the early 1980s, when their parks and amenities department ordered a set for the seafront, and a similar set for Egerton Park.

The spokesperson said the shelters were not bespoke to Bexhill, but came, in effect, from a supplier's catalogue. No further details were available of their history.

Later this year the demolished shelters will be replaced by four new examples, and one kiosk. The designs were chosen from 140 entrants to a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) competition by a panel of judges.

The final result of this competition is still being refined. The Next Wave project website, www.next-wave.org.uk, says: "The new shelter designs are now being fully costed for material specification and tender purposes.

"For reasons of commercial sensitivity final designs and specifications cannot be published until this is completed. You will be able to see the designs when they are released on this website first."
