Seafront walk in Bognor to help heroes

A Bognor Regis woman wants to get residents walking along the seafront for injured service personnel.

Janet Tapping is organising her first charity event in aid of Help for Heroes.

She hopes her efforts will end with scores of people strolling along the promenade on June 7.

She is arranging a series of walks from the bandstand to Felpham and back.

Those taking part will be sponsored for one hour, two hours or three hours on their feet rather than for the distances covered.

This should allow those who are athletic, average and OAPs and grandchildren to equally take part.

"I want to do my bit for Help for Heroes. I have always been very service-minded. I have helped various service charities but I have never done anything like organising this walk before," she said.

"One of my friends raised 7,000 for Help for Heroes with a sponsored swim near Salisbury and that has spurred me on."

Help for Heroes was started to provide practical help for servicemen and women who have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mrs Tapping (75), of High Street, served for four years in the Royal Navy as a pay writer. Part of that time was spent in Malta during the Suez crisis.

Her husband was also in the services and was involved with the Malayan and Borneo crises some 50 years ago. Other members of her family have also served their country.

She added that she hoped others around the town would share her enthusiasm for backing British forces on their current operations.

"Service personnel are keeping the peace and so many are coming back maimed and blinded for life," she stated.

More details on the walk can be obtained from Mrs Tapping on 01243 824414.
