Seal seen in the Ouse

NEWHAVEN crane driver Michael Commons was surprised when he spotted a seal swimming upriver near Denton Island on Tuesday.

Mr Commons, who works at RMC Aggregates, said he had only seen a seal once before in his 40 years of working in the town. 'It was about 5ft long, with big round eyes and was going up towards Lewes,' he said.

Trevor Weeks, of East Sussex Wildlife Rescue Ambulance Service, said seals were known to swim up the Ouse to find secluded muddy banks, where they rested and basked in the sun, when seas were rough.
