Search is on for carnival queen

WINTER may still be here, but thoughts are already turning to the delights of summer as Bexhill Carnival organisers set about appointing the event's Royal Court.

In time-honoured tradition, the Carnival will be presided over by a Queen, together with her deputy and two princesses, and also a junior princess.

The junior princess will be chosen from girls aged seven to 10 who put their names forward for the title, while the Queen and her other consorts will be drawn from the 11 to 14 age group.

Enid Houghton, the carnival’s only honorary life member, said: “Entrants’ judging will be held on Saturday, March 19 at All Saints’ Church Hall, Sidley, at 2.30pm.

“Entries can be made on the day if young ladies arrive early enough to register their details, or they may give advance notice to Pauline Bullock on 01424 211711 after March 3.

“The girl chosen as Carnival Queen will receive the Houghton Cup, which I have donated in memory of my late husband, and will have her name inscribed on it.

“She will be able to keep the cup for a year.”

During their term of office, the Carnival Queen and her court will not only play a key role in Bexhill’s celebrations, but visit other carnivals and take part in high-profile events around the town.

This year’s Bexhill Carnival parade is on Saturday, July 30 and the theme for floats and fancy dress is Music and Musicals.
