Seawater passes test

SEAWATER at Worthing passed European Standards for cleanliness for the past summer bathing season.

The water monitored by the Environment Agency between May and September was classified as good for 2003 with 12 of the 20 samples achieving excellent rating and none failing the standards.

In 2002 Worthing's beach marginally failed the European mandatory standards so was not eligible for an Encams Clean Beach Award which it had previously held continuously between 1996 and 2002. The council is keen to regain the award and the 2003 results mean it will be eligible to apply again in 2004.

Peter Green, executive member for environmental Services says "With a combination of clean seawater and great weather this year, Worthing's beaches were as crowded as I have seen for many years.

"I was really pleased the water quality was up to standard, especially after the marginal failure last year. The council will continue to work in partnership with Southern Water and the Environment Agency to improve water quality".
