Section of northern Bognor relief road approved at last

Final approval has been given for the western section of the Bognor Regis northern relief road.

The decision by Arun District Council planning officer Keith Wheway comes almost five years after planning permission for the route was first sought.

That initial application was followed by a more recent proposal, with details about the road's construction, which was submitted to the district council in September, 2007.

The proposal contained 113 separate documents and involved a mass of consultation.

Some 14 conditions have been imposed by Mr Wheway as a result of the consultation to control the way the road is built.

His decision gives the developers of the Felpham section of the site six development the go-ahead to build the road from the A259 near Hoe Lane to the A29 north of the Southern Cross Industrial Estate in North Bersted.

It will cross the railway line to Bognor on a bridge. The single carriageway road has to be built according to a strict timetable linked to the number of homes constructed on the 700-home estate.

But the completion of the road, designed to take traffic away from the town centre, is believed to be at least five years away.

Mr Wheway told a recent meeting of Arun district councillors the latest starting time for building work for the homes was this spring.
