Security to be reviewed at Link Road site

Diesel was stolen a number of dumper trucks had their mirrors and headlights smashed during the incident.

The vandals struck between 9am on Sunday (May 11) and 6am the next day.

But East Sussex County Council says the incident has not significantly hampered progress on the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road project.

An ESCC spokesperson said: “Overnight between Sunday and Monday a number of dumper trucks were damaged on the site and some diesel was also stolen. The damage was significant enough to prevent the vehicles from being used immediately however they are now operating safely across the site.

“We have 24hr security across the site which will be reviewed following the incident, however we do not anticipate that this will cause a delay to the project. The matter is currently being investigated by Sussex Police.”

Cllr Phil Scott, a member of ESCC’s Link Road Forum, said: “Security is adequate but enhanced security would be most welcome.

“It is a big site of 6km in length which brings challenges for managing all of it.”

Sergeant Mark Evans, of the Bexhill Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “This is a clear case of mindless criminal damage which has resulted in a number of vehicles being damaged.

“The location is close to footpaths regularly used by dog walkers, and I would appeal to any witnesses to contact Sussex Police or anonymously via Crimestoppers quoting reference 0077 13/05.”
