SEDLESCOMBE WINE CLUB: Our next event is this Friday July 22 at 7pm a talk and tasting on Portuguese wines, held at a venue in Northiam . We are a very friendly group of wine lovers,who meet once a month for great wine tastings and talks mostly in the village hall. Become a member, annual subscription is £35 per person. Major event and outside visits extra. All events at 7.30pm on a Friday of each month, unless otherwise stated. Guest members are welcome and can pay a fee of £7.50 for each event attended. SEDLESCOMBE FAYRE 2016: What a glorious day it was on Saturday, the weather was fantastic and Sedlescombe certainly had a fayre day to remember this year. The vintage car parade arranged by Chris Hone, transported Mrs Ham with George Jones and Angus Oaten, two year 6 pupils from Sedlescombe Primary school to open the event. Lots of you turned up to say good bye to see Mrs Ham as she retires as head mistress after 25 years at our village school. George and Angus then continued on with the help of parish Councillor Peter Anson throughout the afternoon acting as MC’s .

The Sedlescombe and District Gardening Society summer show had a good turn out of entries in their marquee with lots of certificates and cups awarded later in the afternoon after the judging had taken place.

Many of the village groups including Sedlescombe Green WI, Sedlescombe Flower club, St John the Baptist Parish church, Sedlescombe village hall, Sedlescombe Players, Sedlescombe Parish Council, Sedlescombe Wine Club, Sedlescombe Rangers, Sedlescombe Youth club, Sedlescombe cricket club and Sedlescombe Golf club alongside local crafts and businesses all took part and hope you had the opportunity to meet up and learn about the many varied activities there are in the area. It was lovely to see so many families enjoying the day in the sun - it goes without saying that the Queens Head bar with its Pimms tent was very popular along with countless cups of tea being served out of the pavilion by the Friends of the church volunteers.

The goose made a star appearance twice this year at the beginning and at the end of the day. The first “drop” was won by square E10 owned by Sally Sidgewick, the second drop later in the day was run by the Round table so I am just waiting on their information as to the shared winners, the goose managed to straddle two squares!

Loose Ends were the perfect choice for live music throughout the afternoon performing around the refreshment are it was so nice to see family, friends and neighbours meeting and enjoying the performance.

K9 rescue remedy gave a wonderful and heart warming display in the arena

There was much, much more to see and do, hopefully for all age groups and whatever your interests –maybe you would like to be involved in arranging something on the day for next year? More details will follow for a meeting later in the year and the full resultsof the day. The fayre would not have happened though without the effort, leadership, time and enthusiasm of Debra Veitch, who headed up the Sedlescombe Societies Association with the assistance of John Parsons, Brian Croucher, Nicola Evans , Anne Stanley, Janet Heap, Michelle Brister, Judy Torrance, Lucy Brownsdon, Dave Brabants, Peter Anson, Celeste Barker and Helen Watts. Well done to them all for providing such a super day for the village – now they can all have a nice cool Pimms of their own!

DONATORS THANK YOU: The fantastic prizes were donated this year were thanks to the generosity of the Brickwall Hotel, the Queens Head, Clockhouse Hair and Beauty, Bella Vista restaurant, Treat of Battle, Sedlescombe Model aircraft club, Pashley Manor gardens, Sedlescombe Vineyard, Carr Taylor Vineyard, Vicarys of Battle, Brian Croucher, Sedlescombe Golf Club, Sedlescombe Players , Jonathan Vine hall, Big Green Cardigan festival, Sedlescombe Stores, Great Park Farm Nursery All proceeds from the draw go towards village causes. Once again Chris Campbell sponsored advertising boards in the local area and Pumphouse Designs designed and printed the posters and flyers

SEDLESCOMBE – FIRST IN ROTHER: Sedlescombe is the first Parish in Rother to do a Neighbourhood Plan and its now out for the formal consultation. We need to show we have the support of the community for the Plan to be approved. Without an approved Plan, Sedlescombe is at risk of housing development in large numbers where the community does not want it. Sedlescombe is being asked to find space for 35 houses in and around the village that both satisfy the District Council’s policies but also satisfy the majority of the community’s aspirations for new housing. The Parish Council has spent the last 3 years working on the plan and now its time for the formal consultation. To find out more about the plan you can look at it on line, at www.sedlescombe.org.uk or look at a hard copy in the village shop. Consultation forms are also available on line or in the shop. Important Date for your diary : There will be an exhibition of the proposed sites on Sunday July 31 at the Village Hall between 10am and 4pm.

SEDLESCOMBE GREEN WI MEETING: The next meeting in the village hall will be on Wednesday July 27 at 7.30pm when June Felstead will talk about the work of A.L.S.A.R Search dogs in Sussex . Visitors and new members are always welcome . For more details please call 870533.

THE BIG PAINT IN: On August 9 and 10 2016, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, Sedlescombe Parish Church, St. John-the-Baptist will hold a two-day Art Workshop in the church and churchyard. “The Big Paint-In” is under the guidance of Art Teacher Mary-lynne Durrell MA ATD. It is hoped it will encourage local people, amateur art groups, and professional artists, to create mixed media paintings in this lovely space.The church building, with its surrounding flora and fauna, is an inspirational place in which to paint. Huge 17th century Spanish chestnut trees, old textured brick paths, orchids growing amongst grass in dappled light, weathered gravestones, butterflies and birds, contribute to the ambience of our country church nestling in the landscape.The workshop fee is being kept as low as possible to encourage this community event; £20 for one day, £30 for two days. A child accompanied by an adult pays only £1 per day. All proceeds in aid of the church Restoration Fund. Advanced booking and payment required.

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER EVENING: The Friends of Sedlescombe Church are pleased to present Thomasin Trezise, a professional operatic singer who has worked successfully in opera, music-theatre and on the concert platform most recently at Glydebourne. Thomasin will be performing an evening of opera favourites, including “O mio babbino Caro” by Puccini, “The Habanera” from Bizet’s Carmen, “The Brindisi” from Verdi’s La Traviata at the Sedlescombe Parish church on Sunday August 28. The performance will commence at 6.30pm with a welcome reception from 6pm. Tickets are £10 and available by calling 870344 or emailing [email protected]. We do hope you will be able to join us for this special evening in Sedlescombe.

ST MICHAELS HOSPICE OPEN GARDENS 2016: The last of the weekly open gardens is on this Tuesday July 26, at Iden. Burnt Oak Manor, Grove Lane TN31 7QA will be open from 10.30am to 4pm with refreshments throughout the day along with bric a brac, plant and other stalls. Free parking available. The admission price of £4 allows access to both throughout the day. Booklets, with details of all the gardens open in the surrounding area in aid of St Michaels hospice, are on sale at the Sedlescombe Stores. The season will continue with one garden open in August and one open in October.
