BARN DANCE: Say “Howdy” to your partner as tonight Friday May 8 in the village hall, Sedlescombe School are running a Barn Dance. This is with the Catsfield Steamers and there is also a ploughman’s supper included in the ticket price. Time starts 7pm. The tickets are £10 per adult and £5 for each child and can be obtained from the school. Be quick if you want to be there !

PLANT MARKET: This Saturday May 9 between 10.30am and 12.30pm, Sedlescombe and District Gardening Society are holding their annual plant market. A wide variety of plants and shrubs will be on sale including vegetables, herbs, perennials and bedding plants. In addition there will be stalls selling greeting cards, cakes, cut flowers as well as a flower display. This is an event not to miss so make a date in the diary. There will also be refreshments to keep you going through the morning.

SEDLESCOMBE AND DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB: Meet at the village hall on Wednesday May13, this month there will be a visiting NAFAS flower arranger Patricia Ellis interpreting “Simple Pleasures”. What will they be? There will be refreshments served during the evening and the opportunity to socialise and meet new friends. There will also be the chance to win one of the floral arrangements to enjoy at home. Members and visitors are welcome to come along for some inspiration or just simply to enjoy the demonstration. QUIZ NIGHT: There will be a Quiz Night in the Village Hall in Sedlescombe on Friday May 29. 7:00pm for 7:30pm. Teams of 6 are invited to come and join in at £8.00 per head. This includes a Fish and Chip supper, tea and coffee. To avoid missing out on a very enjoyable evening, please contact Andrea on 01424 871 625 to book a table.

SPRING FAYRE: Next Saturday May 16 the Spring Fayre will take place on the Green. The Pipes and Drums will again open the Fayre at 1pm followed by the children from the local school dancing around the Maypole at 1.30pm .This will be followed by ‘twirlers’ which is a group of children from the school. ‘Loose Ends’ is a first class group who will play popular music for about one and a half hours finishing with the pipes and drums again and then the raffle will be drawn. It has been arranged for a town crier to open the Fayre. This year we have been able to obtain a pillory for those brave people can poke their heads through to receive a few wet sponges. There will be plenty of stalls and games to enjoy with refreshments, sandwiches and cakes available throughout the afternoon. There is no charge for entry but raffle tickets are on sale in the Post Office.

It was with great sadness, that returning from a few days away, I learnt the news that Bob Harris has passed away. He was involved in many of the groups around the village and was never content to be just an onlooker. He was a keen and skilled gardener and I first met Bob when we moved to the village, he was then membership secretary of the Garden Society, always keen to sign anyone up, I soon found out that I was his immediate target! Since that time he moved on to many other projects one of them being to set up the Short mat bowls club, this became so successful that they had to meet on two afternoons a week. Member of the Royal British Legion, always proud of his connection with them and enjoyed the camaraderie of the members. He also found time for many years to be part of the Sedlescombe Societies committee, helping organise the annual summer village fayre on the sports field, and was one of the main instigators of the May fayre mentioned above on the Green. Both of these events have raised money for village groups and local charity. He was recognised in 2009 by the Parish Council and presented with a Citizenship Award for his outstanding contribution to the lives of people in Sedlescombe which was very well deserved. We had worked together on many events over the years and he will be greatly missed by me and I am sure by many others too around Sedlescombe. This is only a small glimpse into his life here in the village, the most important part was shared with Audrey, his daughter and grandchildren.
