Sedlescombe

SEDLESCOMBE PLAYERS: Tickets for the thriller ‘Deadly Nightcap’ are going so well that they shall also be opening the Dress Rehearsal to the public on Tuesday January 27 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. Admission will be £5 at the door - the bar will be open. A donation from the entire show will be made to the Royal British Legion.

BRITISH LEGION: The Sedlescombe branch of the British Legion raised £2689 in the 2014 Poppy Appeal. Thanks go to all the collectors, the Branch Organiser and especially all those that bought a poppy and contributed. This money along with all the other collections throughout the country will all go towards supporting ex-servicemen and women nationally. The Branch has also raised separate funds at various events locally and several donations have been given to Maid House, our British Legion care home for ex-servicemen and their partners in Bexhill including contributing to the construction of a summer house for the residents to use in the grounds. A small Christmas gift was also given to the 16 service widows who live in the village to commemorate 2014 a special year of remembrance of the debt we all owe for sacrifices their husbands made. If we missed anyone please let me know. You might like to join and participate in 2015? We meet every month in the Queens Head and would welcome new members. Contact me, John Page at [email protected] or 870455 on the telephone. We wish you a happy 2015, a wish, in no small part made possible in our troubled world, by the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve in our armed forces.

Another Horticultural Society: I have been asked by Chris Hone to bring to the attention of Sedlescombe residents the activities of the neighbouring Horticultural Society of Westfield. Their committee has been busy over the Christmas break arranging the 2015 programme. The season starts with a St Valentine’s Quiz night with supper on Saturday, February 14 at Westfield Parish Hall. The Spring Show and seed swap is on the March 28. We have a keynote speaker, Mr Hilary Newman, from Hadlow Agricultural College on Wednesday, April 15. His talk is entitled “The Small Greenhouse”, something most of us have, but do we know how to use to their full potential. Come along and find out. The season continues with a plant sale held at their Village fete on May 23. There is a coach trip to RHS Wisley on Saturday, June 13 to be followed by a self drive to the Lavender Nursery near Otford on July 25. There is another self drive on Saturday, August 22 to the Friary Gardens, Hastings. September 12 is the Autumn Show, with the AGM on October 21 Saturday, October 24 will see the weigh in of pumpkins to be held at the Plough Inn. Further details of the above activities will appear nearer the time. Do make a note in your diary now though, particularly of the talk by Mr Hilary Newman. The year book is prepared and will be delivered shortly together with the newsletter to all members. All these details and more can be found on the Westfield Village Web site and follow the link.
