Sedlescombe

It is only a few days away now, after all the preparations, dressing the tree, buying and wrapping presents for those we love and remembering friends by sending Christmas cards we shall settle down to enjoy Christmas in all its glory. Christmas is also a time though that we think of those that are no longer with us and also those that are in need , even after centuries on this planet we still seem to always have somewhere in the world that is in crisis and someone who is in need so it is always a good thing to remind ourselves that we are so fortunate and look to see what we might be able to achieve for others.

I’m sure that these sentiments might be reflected in the church services that will be taking place over the festive season, there will be the usual Parish Eucharist service at 10am on Sunday December 22 followed later in the day at 6pm by a carol service followed by mulled wine and mince pies at St John the Baptist parish church.

On Tuesday December 24 at 4pm, the crib service takes place when children are welcome as angels, shepherds and kings , costumes will be available or bring your own. Later that evening at 11pm candlelit midnight mass will take place with Christmas Eucharist taking place on Christmas day at 10am to celebrate the birth of Christ.

As we are Whatlington and Sedlescombe parish it should be noted that they will have their pageant at Whatlington Church at 3.30pm on Sunday December 22

I was invited to the village hall last week to see the pre-school perform a mini Christmas concert alongside Mrs Ham and the Year 6 children from Sedlescombe primary which was a Christmas treat, lots of reindeers , angels and kings not to mention superman were there. It was a lovely afternoon for parents and visitors to see these young children enjoying the spirit of Christmas.

The village hall is a great venue and a focus for all kinds of events in the village, therefore we must thank Pauline and Reg Glew who have been Chair and secretary over the last few years for their leadership as they step down for the new committee coming in early next year. I am sure everyone will happily come together to ensure a smooth hand over, drawing on the experience of those committee members who are already in place.

2014 may seem a long way off but preparations are well under way for Sedlescombe to celebrate Burns Night at the village hall on Friday January 31. The evening will feature music from Jiggery Pokery, a traditional music band , piping in of the haggis by John Ash, which you will then have for your supper, Scottish reading of the poet Robert Burns and of course, some dancing. A Licensed Bar will be available with a wee dram available if you should wish. Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm, tartan and kilts optional. Tickets are just £10 and a great gift for Christmas , these can be reserved by calling 870344 or 882438 or 870968 or purchased now from Sedlescombe Stores.
