Most people will not need reminding that this weekend marks Remembrance Sunday, the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. On this day people across the nation will pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave Service men and women. So please don’t pass by the poppy seller but give generously and wear your poppy with pride to show your support of the Royal British Legion.

The Friends of Sedlescombe Church Heritage Trust members are reminded that they are invited to attend the, usually short, AGM this Monday November 12, 7pm at Asselton House, The Green. There will then be an opportunity to meet other members as refreshments and nibbles will be served following the meeting.

Sedlescombe and District Flower Club, they have an Open evening on Wednesday November 14 at the village hall featuring Julie Brownlea demonstrating under the theme “ It’s Christmas again”. Welcome seasonal nibbles and drinks will be served from 6.30 to 7.30pm prior to the demonstration. There will be a sales table where you can buy for your flower arranging needs, a general raffle and the flower raffle. The evening will also mark the clubs 30th birthday. This will be a ticketed event and it would be helpful for catering if you would reserve tickets priced £6.50 for you and friends by contacting Norma on 01797 223923. You will certainly be very welcome though if you decide at the last minute that you would like to come and see what it is all about with some tickets available on the door.

Saturday November 17, when the Parish church will be holding their newly named Advent fayre, at the village hall from 2pm. All the usual stalls will be there including gifts, cakes, tombola, books. The elves toy shop will be open once again. All donations for any of these stalls would be gratefully accepted please phone 870688 or 870808. There will be a booze raffle and a super general raffle with prizes generously provided by local businesses. To have a rest between shopping and chatting, afternoon tea will be served so do come and join in this warm and friendly afternoon whilst at the same time raising funds for our church.

The School and PTA are working hard to fund raise for around £35000 for significant improvements to the school swimming pool. This will include new communal changing rooms, some individual cubicles, toilets and showers, new fencing and a new safety surface around the pool. Eight dads have recently walked or cycled the South Downs Way, around 104 miles to raise sponsorship for this project - they are amazing people. In addition to this a Y6 child with fantastic Karate skills, Emily Knight, has performed a sponsored ‘break out’, breaking planks of wood with her hand/arm, ouch! We are working hard to create a fantastic Christmas Fayre with all funds going towards the pool improvements too. If anyone in the local area would like to send a donation to this project, you are most welcome, - cheques can be made payable to Sedlescombe School PTA and sent to the school. When these improvements are built, the pool will continue to be open to the community with greatly improved facilities, so do not forget that the school pool is able to benefit the local community too. Mrs Ham writes to please vote for Sedlescombe CE Primary School’s this Community project in the Kent and Sussex Courier throughout November and into December. We have been shortlisted for this competition to improve our swimming pool facilities to include new communal changing rooms and also 6 individual changing cubicles for adults, as well as toilet and shower facilities. We need loads of votes every week please, as the projects with the most votes at the end of the competition timeline win some funding. Look in the paper every Friday and vote for us please, sending in coupons and/or voting by text. Thank you very much, we are determined to make our pool more accessible to the local community from 2013 onwards.

The Sixty-Eighth Annual General Meeting of the Sedlscombe & District Garden Society will be held on Friday November 16 at Sedlescombe Village Hall commencing at 7.15 p.m.

The Meeting will be followed by refreshments and a talk by Dr. Patrick Roper on the subject of “Funghi”.

If anyone has any comments or suggestions regarding the Garden Society, or indeed wishes to stand for a post on the committee, please come along and give us your support.

I’m sure the Observer will not mind on this occasion if you should show some short term allegiance to the Courier to help our school win some backing for their project, especially if you buy both papers.

There may still be time to get a team together for the Battle and Villages Lions Children in Need Quiz Night on Friday, November 16 at Ninfield Memorial Hall, 7.30 for an 8.00pm start. A strict maximum of 6 players per table, the price is £6 per person which includes a Ploughman’s Supper. There will be a cash prize for the winning team and a raffle during the evening.
