Tonight, Friday November 2 at 7.30m in Committee room 2 at the village hall, the AGM of the Sedlescombe Societies’ Association will take place. Please do try and come along to show your appreciation for the voluntary work they do organising spring and summer fayres for the village. The committee is in need of a new secretary and committee members to ensure the fayre for 2013 goes ahead. Village groups and organisations which are in need of modest funds are invited to apply for a share of the limited profits raised this year due to the cancellation of the village in July. Thank you to everyone who gave their time and effort before and during the jumble sale last Saturday, everybody worked so hard to ensure all the donations were collected, sorted and ready for sale for when the doors opened. Luckily there were plenty of buyers too and £423 was raised on the day towards Friends of Sedlescombe Church Heritage Trust funds.

Members of the trust are reminded that they are invited to attend the AGM is on Monday November 12, 7pm at Asselton House. Refreshments and nibbles will be served following the meeting.

Please mark your diary for Saturday November 17, when the Parish church will be holding their annual Christmas fair at the village hall from 2pm. More details to follow over the next few weeks.

You may have seen the article in last weeks Battle Observer reporting that our own Kester House here in Sedlescombe has been short-listed as a finalist in the Beautiful South annual awards for Excellence 2012/13. This is Derek and Monique’s first venture into the world of bed and breakfast and what a fantastic start, after just over a year to be nominated for this award. They have both worked so hard to achieve this high standard and let’s all hope that they will get the reward they deserve by winning their category. Well done to them both.

Mrs Ham writes that Sedlescombe school are now on half term holidays but return on Monday November 5, for the beginning of Term 2. This will be a very busy term as we plan all the Christmas festivities. We have children’s plays, choir events, parties, children’s disco, PTA Fayre, Christmas Dinner day, Father Christmas’ visit, and a performance of “The Nutcracker” for all the children to enjoy performed by a visiting drama/dance company. Do not forget our School Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 1, between 12 and 4pm, everyone is welcome.

We are working hard on improving the traffic issue around the school in the mornings and afternoons. However, we know that this is a common problem for all schools. I would like to ask if any local residents would be willing to offer their driveway for parents/carers to park their car, in the mornings 8.30 – 9.10am, and/or in the afternoons 3.15 – 3.50pm. This is only on school days. If you would be willing to allow a parent/carer to do this, could you please phone Mrs. Ham on 01424 870585, or email on [email protected] . Thank you very much.

The children will be busy creating road safety posters for the Parish Council during November.

Our Year 6 children are off on their annual residential trip to Carroty Wood on November 6 until November 9. This is an outdoor adventurous activity centre in Tonbridge, full of challenges and fun for the children and staff. We hope they have a great time, are safe and return having achieved several of the challenges.

This quote was sent to me recently which I thought you may find interesting “The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on public assistance”. This ws written by Cicero in 55 BC, so, evidently we have not learned much in the past 2,067 years
