See the torch which will mark air cadets milestone

The Olympic flame may be burning bright in Rio '“ but Worthing will be having its own torch relay in honour of the air cadets.

To mark the 75th anniversary of the Air Training Corps, the torch will be visiting the war memorial in Steyne Gardens at around 3.20pm, where it will be handed over to the 45F Worthing squadron.

Carrying the flame will be a man who is the same age as the training corps – Chris Nutland, who himself was a cadet. He was in the RAF Volunteer Reserve and then became a volunteer staff member for the air cadets.

Accompanying him on his journey with the torch will be a current squadron member, Cadet Sergeant Charlotte Paynter, 18.

On their journey they will carry the torch from Steyne Gardens to the pier and then on to Worthing Lido.

There will also be demonstrations of the skills that the cadets learn and a recruitment stand opposite Montague Place for new cadets.

With members aged between 12 and 20, the air cadets offer young people a taste of life in the services and skills they can use in their future careers.

The Worthing squadron was one of the first 50 squadrons to be created when the Air Training Corps was formed in 1941.
