Selsey road turned into '˜dangerous slurry pit'

People living along Manor Lane say the grass verges have been churned up by HGVs passing each other along the narrow road and wet mud is causing cars to skid.

One lady apparently slipped on the muddy verge and says she was almost hit by a car, while a man was reportedly nearly struck by a spinning car.

Manor Lane is too narrow for two lorries to pass, say residents, as they turn onto Drift Road to access the East Beach Walk development, where 110 homes are being built.

Linda Phillips-Keep lives at 10 Manor Lane and took these photos.

She said: “The situation has now become so dangerous. A woman messaged me saying she was nearly killed last night when she slipped in front of a car.

“A man was almost hit by a car spinning in the road and this morning I put my brakes on and my car just slide down the road.

“Everyone here is absolutely furious, we’ve tried ringing everyone but nothing is being done. It’s just not acceptable.

“Manor Lane has been turned into a slurry pit of a road and it’s getting worse and worse.

“It’s not safe for drivers or pedestrians at all.”

Linda said gas works which are currently taking place means the pavement on one side of the road is being taken up, forcing people to walk along the muddy verges and in the road.

A number of other people have taken to social media to vent their frustration.

Amongst the many comments on Facebook include Geraldine Bolton, who said: “Yes it is totally disgusting along there now - everyone is upset about the mess and with the elderly living nearby it is a nightmare to get around.”

Linda added: “The worst thing is that we are all going to have to suffer this for the next two years while the houses are being built unless something is urgently done.”

Tim Hill, Barratt Homes managing director, said: “The planning authority has designated the delivery route. We would be happy to re-enter into any dialogue with them to find suitable alternatives to mitigate the impact to the local residents.

“We are in talks with the local council and we have agreed to carry out temporary remedial works to the verges on Manor Lane between Beech Road and Mountwood Road when the utility companies have completed their gas works.”
