The application (13/04256/FUL), submitted by Tanner and Tilley Planning Ltd on behalf of Renaissance Retirement Ltd and the Ministry of Justice, includes the demolition of the existing building and erection of a block of 39 flats with vehicle access off Bolnore Road.

“Renaissance Retirement are proud to announce its acquisition of a wonderful site for development on Bolnore Road within a short walk of the centre of Haywards Heath town centre,” states the company on its website.

“The development will comprise 1 and 2 bedroom luxury retirement apartments together with a sumptuous 0wners’ lounge and guest suite.”

Peter Tanner, managing director of Tanner and Tilley Planning told the Mid Sussex Times the application for 39 apartments was ‘a modest number’ but appropriate for the location which offered great links to the town centre.

Only one in six residents would probably own a car said Mr Tanner, defending the proposal for just 19 vehicle spaces to service the new accommodation block.

The design for the building had originally been more contemporary, he said, but upon request by Mid Sussex District Council’s design committee a ‘more arts and crafts’ look was eventually put forward.

It is anticipated the application will be determined in May.
