The event was well attended and Centre/Volunteer Co-ordinator Vikki Climpson said many people don’t realise what a warm and inviting and fun place The Bridge, which is based at Priory Road, Hastings, is. “The Bridge is a social enterprise, and its strapline is ‘A place for everyone’, she said. “We have parent and toddler groups, adult interest groups such as Local History, Choir, and Art, host a Children’s Centre, and hold courses in cooking, gardening, and anything else that we can get funding for!”

The Bridge opened in May 2006 as a result of the community’s efforts in raising funding, agreeing the design and overseeing the building process. Profit generated by the organisation is re-invested for the benefit of the local community. At the heart of The Bridge is a popular café which serves healthy food at reasonable prices and offers the opportunity of training in catering and food preparation for local residents and volunteers. Vikki says they have a few other ideas in the pipeline: “We are currently trying to get funding for adult education as research we have conducted has shown that many locals would like the chance to improve on previous exam grades and we are in the process of opening a coffee lounge.” www.thebridgehastings.co.uk
