The owner of a town centre shoe shop has decided to call it a day after 26 years.
Richard Meikle has run The Shoe Rack in St Andrew’s Market in Waldegrave Street since 1989.
We’ve had many regular customers over the years and we would like to thank all of them for their support over the last 26 yearsRichard Meikle
It will be closing next Saturday (April 4).
The store started off as a stall in the market which Richard launched using £500 of his own money.
He said: “With the support of customers I was able to manage three shops in total at one point, The Shoe Rack in Hastings, one shop in Rye and one in Ashford.”
Richard said one of the reasons he decided to close was the decline in the number of people visiting his shop.
He said: “Over the years indoor markets around the country have closed down and others that have stayed open have seen a drop in the numbers of shoppers.
“There are also a lot of places now where people can buy shoes these days. Internet sales have also reduced my trade.”
Richard runs another shop called Shoe Shuffle in Castle Street, which will remain open. All of his stock at his shop in St Andrew’s Market will be moved to his other store.
