Shopfront and air conditioning application is turned down

THE concerns of residents took precedence when Rother District Council's planning committee turned down an application for new shopfront and airconditioning units from Budgens in Sea Road.

This came from Mr C Selvarajah who wants permission for a new shopfront, which has already been installed, as well as refrigeration and two air conditioning units to be removed from the flat roof and placed lower down.

The applicant also wants increased insulation to the chiller rooms and a small office air conditioning unit to the north side wall of the shop.

Councillor Deirdre Williams recommended refusal because the changes were not acceptable in her view, and would not overcome the problems of noise which nearby residents have been complaining of.

“There will be impact on the neighbours,” she told the Chamber.

“They are entitled to consideration. They were here first.”

Cllr Joy Hughes felt that the applicant should have applied for permission before making changes in the store which now required planning permission and felt this had been done with “a degree of arrogance”.
