Shoplifter is caught on the run

A SHOPLIFTER from Woolworths got more than he bargained for when he was chased by a keen fitness fanatic.

The runner caught up with him, overpowered him and held him until police arrived.

PC David Gill from police divisional patrol unit said: We were in Rye at the time.

There was a call to say a shoplifter had been detained in Bexhill by a member of the public, who had witnessed him taking stuff from Woolworths store in Devonshire Road.

The shoplifter had done a runner.

The member of the public who chased him was a keen runner - which I suppose was unfortunate for the shoplifter.

A member of staff also gave chase, but he had to give up.

This chap caught the guy and detained him until we arrived. He had several packs of minidiscs worth about 26 still in his possession.

A man in his 20s is helping police with enquiries.

PC Gill praised the pursuer: I think it was a spirited action. You never know what danger might be involved, but he took it on himself to bring the young chap to justice.
