The boat first went out around 2.40pm to find two people in the water at Shoreham Harbour, but there was no sign of anyone on the west or east breakwater.

The RNLI said the lifeboat crew returned to harbour but were then informed people had been spotted 30ft above the water on the West Pier at Brighton.
