Shoreham man wins damages from Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton

A Shoreham man has received £950,000 damages after doctors at Royal Sussex Hospital, Brighton failed to diagnose a spinal infection which left him with limited use of his arms and legs.

Brian Wistanley (64), underwent an operation in April 2000 to install a valve to help him speak after his larynx was removed after he suffered cancer of the throat. Following the operation Mr Wistanley became feverish with severe neck pain.

His condition went undiagnosed for four months, despite advice from a neurosurgeon that he may be suffering from an infection.

Mr Wistanley was admitted to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire in October 2000 with spinal injuries. He remained there for 18 months where he underwent painful surgery as well suffering from septacemia and deep vein thrombosis.

He began his court battle in April 2003 with Royal Sussex University Hospitals Trust for clinical negligence.
