When a routine inspection found their fire alarms to have problems, the 3rd Shoreham sea scouts faced the choice of updating the system – a difficult option considering their limited funds – or risk being shut down until it was found to be up to scratch.

Thankfully Robert Jewiss, who has been a scout leader for 15 years and is also an expert engineer at UK Power Networks, stepped in, rallying his workmates together through the company’s volunteer programme to install a new fire alarm system at the Les Goodbody Centre, Adur Recreation Ground.

The 49-year-old, of West Way was joined by colleagues Graham Martin, Keith Ayres and Dave Wright, who carried out the work using their volunteering allowance – two paid days offered to UK Power Network staff to volunteer or fundraise in their community.

Having already used his allowance to run a scout camp, Robert used two days of his holiday, which he said was ‘worth it’.

He said: “It’s a wonderful organisation. The kids get so much out of it and we get a lot back. We speak about community, respect, resilience, self-reliance and teach them sailing and sports for a healthier lifestyle.

“There is no point complaining about kids hanging about on street corners if they have got nothing to do.
