Sign up for BexerCycle

HOW would you like to cycle round Europe without getting saddlesore?

The opportunity is coming up to take part in a virtual bike ride and raise funds for a major local charity.

The first BexerCycle raised more than £4,000 last year. A follow-up event will take place in Devonshire Square on Saturday, April 30.

The idea is that teams and individuals put in sponsored pedal time on exercise bikes to raise cash for Bexhill Caring Community.

Four bikes, supplied by Bexhill Leisure Centre, will be in all-day action and riders’ progress will be charted on a giant map of Europe.

Caring Community manager Jackie Haggerty said: “Demand for our services has grown hugely since the charity came into being in 1965. Four thousand Bexhill people now look to the Caring Community for vital lifestyle support every year.

“So we hope that, once again, riders will turn out in good number to have fun and back the cause. Businesses and organisations can call me on 215116 if they can help.”

The charity receives no government aid, depending entirely on legacies and voluntary donations. A small army of some 150 mainly volunteer workers keep essential services active each year.

Its vital work received the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2006.

From its offices in Sackville Road, the Bexhill Caring Community provides a range of services including community cars, the Dial-a-Ride mini bus, and home library.

Members will also help the housebound and disabled with shopping and visiting.
