Entrants are invited to sign up for Newhaven in Bloom and stand a chance of winning a cup, gold, silver or bronze certificate, as well as gardening gifts from Paradise Park.

The annual competition is organised by Newhaven in Bloom and is designed to make the town more attractive.

The group is hoping to achieve around the same number of entrants as last year, although chairman John Adams said the recession had put people off from taking part.

But he stressed there were categories to suit all talents and budgets.

John said: “I think there is less money about for entering gardening competitions but we are hoping for the same numbers as last year.

“The weather plays a part in it. Some people last year didn’t enter when their plants didn’t flower.”

“We are still doing the flower displays for the town.

Categories this year will include best front garden, best back garden, best kitchen garden, wildlife garden, basket in bloom and best schools.

Judging will take place in July with Graham Amy from Newhaven Town Council and Mark Gilbert from Paradise Park.

The prize giving ceremony will be held in September.

John explained last year the competition attracted about three dozen entrants, although over the years the recession had a downward impact on numbers.

This was because people had less money to spend on their gardens due to the squeeze on incomes and there fore were less inclined to show their gardens off.

Newhaven in Bloom is always keen to attract new members, as numbers remain quite low.

The group is responsible for taking care of around 30 planters in the town at various locations, including the High Street, Denton Island, the war memorial, Newhaven Port entrance and Brighton Road.

To take part in the competition visit Paradise Park in Avis Road, Newhaven on Sunday March 23 from 10am to 2pm where Newhaven in Bloom volunteers will be manning a stand with entry forms.

If you cannot attend on Sunday you will be able to pick up entry forms for the next few weeks at the infocentre for entrants.
