SCHOOLS, offices and shops in the Adur area all paused for three minutes on Friday morning to remember those who died in the terrorist attacks in Washington and New York last Tuesday.

Books of condolences have now been opened at Lancing Parish Hall and Adur Civic Centre.

Inspector Chris Drew, of Shoreham police station, said officers stood outside the station with the flag flying at half-mast for the three minute silence.

Shoreham Methodist Church, Brunswick Road, was open throughout the week for people to pray.

Richard Brunton, a member of Lancing Tabernacle Church, said that the Tuesday evening prayer meeting was given over to praying about the situation in the United States. He added that many other prayer meetings were given over later in the week at various Lancing churches.

Aubrey Willetts, from Shoreham Methodist Church, said that an American flag was draped over the pulpit as a mark of respect and that several people from various denominations went to pray at the church.

Paul Inglefield, Adur District Council s spokesman, said staff at Adur Civic Centre gathered in the reception area to mark the three minute silence at 11am.

Mr Inglefield added that staff and members of the public at Adur Council s leisure centres also stopped in memory of all those who died.

Firefighters from Shoreham and Lancing fire stations assembled outside their stations for parade at 11am.
