Silent disco lovers clean up Brighton beach this Easter

More than 200 Silent Disco Beach Cleaners removed 90 kilos of litter from Brighton Beach on Easter Saturday.

They came together for a Silent Disco Beach Clean between Brighton’s two piers and collected plastic cups, bottles, cigarette butts, beer cans, glass bottles, food packaging and disposable barbecues.

Amy Gibson, beach clean organiser of Pier2Pier, said: “Awareness of this issue has risen massively in the past two years, but thousands of people still come and leave their litter behind so we still have a long way to go in changing behaviours and attitudes of our beach visitors.

“The other problem we have is the people who want to dispose of their waste responsibly can’t find any bins on the seafront – on Saturday we had to take our seven full bags of recycling up and over the main road to Little Preston Street. This is not acceptable.”

Pier2Pier is a community beach clean group which hosts free Silent Disco Beach Cleans every month in Brighton. Last year more than 2,000 people took part in one of its beach clean events.

On Saturday, beach cleaners listened to a motivational spring-cleaning Soundtrack via Bluetooth wireless headphones while seafront.

The next Pier2Pier beach clean will take place during Brighton Fringe on Sunday, May 19.
