Silent tribute to 9/11 heroes

REPRESENTATIVES of emergency services held a moving one minute's silence at Lewes War Memorial on Wednesday to remember those who died in the bombing of the World Trade Centre at precisely the same time last year.

School Hill was closed as a fire engine and an ambulance pulled up. Seven firefighters, two paramedics and a police officer stood in the road with heads bowed in memory of their colleagues and all the others who died in the disaster.

A Stars and Stripes flag was draped over the front of the fire engine.

Some 40 bystanders watched in silence.

One man said: 'It is right that we observed this moment. It seemed to be impromptu but it was certainly moving.'
