Hailsham has clinched a Silver-gilt award at the South and South East in Bloom Awards.

In its sixth year of competing, the town was awarded a Silver-gilt certificate in the Large Town category in recognition of the efforts made by Environment Hailsham (formerly Hailsham In Bloom) volunteers to complete a number of horticultural projects during the past 12 months.

Factors that particularly impressed the judges were the plant nursery located at Orchard Park off Grovelands Road, the town centre’s floral displays and maintenance of both the Dennis King Memorial Garden and Diamond Jubilee Rose Garden, as well as the high level of involvement in projects from local businesses and younger members of the community.

The award was presented at the South and South East in Bloom awards ceremony at Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club’s Amex Stadium in Falmer on Wednesday (September 17).

Environment Hailsham chairman Richard Grocock, who is also a Hailsham town councillor, said he was delighted with the award. He said: “Hailsham has been incredibly successful in the South and South East in Bloom competition in recent years, regularly winning Silver-gilt awards and awards in other categories too. Our success is only possible due to the support we receive from everyone in the town, including members of our volunteer network and local business for their generous sponsorship. Obtaining Silver-gilt again is a real achievement, a wonderful result for the town and a fabulous ending to a year’s worth of projects of benefit to the community.”

Town Mayor Cllr Jo Bentley said: “To achieve and maintain the high standard of horticultural displays and local environmental improvement year on year is an outstanding reflection of the work of the Environment Hailsham volunteers. They make sure the town looks great all year round, together with the input of the many community groups which get involved, young and old. Well done to Richard, Jeff and the other Environment Hailsham volunteers for achieving Silver-gilt once again this year. Keep up the good work!”
