RESIDENTS at at a residential home in Mayfield celebrated national Silver Surfers’ Day on May 20 with an interactive quiz using Skype.
The ‘Talented St Thomas’s’ quiz team from St Thomas of Canterbury Court in the village played against four other resident teams from other Sussex Housing and Care sheltered housing sites in Lewes, Cuckfield and Brighton.
Skype is a way to connect with people using the internet and the silver surfers used both video and audio connections to hear and see their fellow residents and listen to the quiz questions, read by Rebecca Branson, scheme manager at St Thomas of Canterbury Court.
Mayfield resident Anne Culley thought the Skype quiz was a marvellous idea. She said: “It’s been a great way of getting everyone together and it’s been fun using the computer to say hello to fellow Sussex Housing and Care residents.”
Quizmaster Rebecca Branson said: “It’s been a great afternoon and everyone has enjoyed connecting up with our other sites in a new way. Our residents are keen to get involved with new technologies and it’s nice that we can support them in learning how to use computers and the Wii. We will be arranging another quiz very soon!”
Silver Surfers’ Day is the biggest, national campaign to promote the use of digital technologies by older people.
Sussex Housing and Care is supporting residents by working with the government’s ‘Get Digital’ programme which has provided new technologies such as digital televisions, Nintendo Wii’s and DVD players to a number of its sites across Sussex.
