Around 1,000 small children have taken part in a musical mixture of songs, rhymes, dances, instruments and rhythm under the leadership of Lissie Kettle, a trained cellist.

She started the sessions in Fernhurst when her children were young, as music classes for babies and toddlers were lacking at the time.

At first, they were held at home with two or three children but the group quickly expanded. It moved first to the village hall, then the pavilion and now to the youth club, where Lissie’s collection of musical accessories can be safely stored.

Accompanied by parents, toddlers from a few months to seven years old attend after-school sessions. They beat drums, blow whistles, shake pompoms, swirl rattles, blow pop-guns, quack quackers, rattle tambourines, fly aeroplanes, clip-clop coconuts, blow bubbles, hop on space hoppers, gallop on rocking horses and learn about rhythm and songs.

The children also learn about sharing and co-operation, and develop co-ordination and confidence.

At the birthday celebration, there were balloons, candles and cakes.
