SITE NOW 'SAFE'

SUSSEX POLICE announced at lunchtime today that the Festival Fireworks site at Marlies Farm, Shortgate, has now been declared safe for an investigation to commence.

The B2192 still remains closed to through traffic and will remain closed for the immediate future.

Police say they do not know when it will be opened.

A police spokeswoman said: 'The weather has helped the situation by damping down the fire site and cooling the acetylene cylinders,'

But she could not confirm precisely where they were situated or how large they were.

The site will be extensively investigated by forensic teams from both East Sussex Fire and Rescue and Sussex Police.

The spokeswoman said: 'The investigation will be a meticulous and time-consuming process.'

The fire was allowed to burn itself out and people stayed away because of the danger further explosions from acetylene tanks.

They take 24 hours to cool.
