The move follows a report from an independent commission set up by the Local Government Association which recommends:

l Six terms in a school year, with two terms before Christmas and no term of more than 38 days.

l A two-week break in October to reduce teacher stress.

l A Christmas break that is never less than two weeks.

l Four terms after Christmas of about six weeks.

l A summer break that is always more than five weeks.

l And five 'flexible' days that can be used for holidays or term days according to regional needs.

Cllr Rupert Simmons, education lead cabinet member, said: 'The Local Government Association is strongly encouraging local authorities to consult on the proposals and present indications are that most intend to consult, or have already done so. We will be very anxious to hear the views of everyone concerned over the next few months.'
